Today's focus: Verizon picks Motorola for FTTP video

By Jim Duffy

Verizon has selected Motorola to supply video network
infrastructure and consumer premises equipment for its
fiber-to-the-premises network.

Terms of the multiyear agreement were not disclosed. Verizon
plans to launch video services on its FTTP networks next year.

Verizon's FTTP build-out currently encompasses nine states.
Motorola will also provide project integration and operational
services.

Motorola recently acquired passive optical network vendor
Quantum Bridge in order to provide optical access products for
carriers' fiber build-outs. Motorola also provides digital video
head-end technology, which is deployed in more than 2,060
systems worldwide, and transport infrastructure, access and
consumer premises equipment, including cable set-top boxes and
modems.

Verizon's selection of Motorola follows SBC's selection of
Alcatel as the integrator for its $6 billion fiber-to-the-node
(FTTN) build-out. Alcatel will also provide end-to-end video
integration services for SBC's FTTN project under a five-year,
$1.7 billion contract.

SBC's FTTN deployment, called Project Lightspeed, is designed to
deliver high-speed broadband services, IP voice and wireless
bundles of products to 18 million households by year-end 2007.
Verizon plans to pass 3 million homes with FTTP infrastructure
by the end of 2005.
