The Bits Is Back Over the last week, we've published a couple of articles on Microsoft's Software Factories (a.k.a. generative software development) and the announcement of the building blocks to be built into the Visual Studio Team System, including Lynn Greiner's overview that puts it into English: http://eletters.ziffdavis.com/zd1/cts?d=69-107-11-98-2611-1567-1 And the technical details: http://eletters.ziffdavis.com/zd1/cts?d=69-107-11-98-2611-1570-1 But it appears that not everybody sees the problem in the same way. In Darryl Taft's article, "Microsoft Lays New Groundwork," he quotes Jack Greenfield, the Microsoft software architect in charge of the Software Factories concept as saying, "IBM will throw bodies at a problem, while with Software Factories Microsoft will throw bits." Referring, that is, to IBM's commitment to the Eclipse open-source development platform. I'm not completely sure if that's true. Or if it's a bad thing. (Doesn't "throw bodies at it" sound like a negative way to say, "Keep programmers employed?") Or if either company is addressing the underlying problems.
