First Looks Roundup: Get There from Here

Whether you're trying to find the hotel or the campsite,
portable GPS systems know how to get you there. Our PC Labs
experts tested three units designed for in-car use, the best
of which features a great interface and driver's-point-of-
view maps and directions. Check out our analysts' reviews
online and never get lost again.

Heavy Duty Printer for the Heavy Duty Office

Sure, there are color lasers small enough to fit on your
desk, but do they have a 200,000-page-per-month duty cycle?
The Ricoh Aficio CL7100D ain't small, and it weighs about as
much as you do, but it pumps out 5-star-quality text at 35
pages per minute, and does well with graphics, too. The
price (including cost per page) is very reasonable, and the
printer is compatible with HP's Web JetAdmin software. Find
out more in our online review. (4 stars)

Increase Your Screen Size

Our favorite thing about the Princeton SENergy 914 is that
it's priced to compete with 17-inch monitors. But it's a 19-
inch LCD, so it's like getting an extra two inches of screen
real estate for free! And you're not losing out on image
quality either--SENergy 914 boasts top-notch picture. Read
all about it in our online review. (4 stars)

Product Bulletin: Newly announced tech offerings

Here are just a few of the items you'll find in our current
Product Bulletin.

E-mail Enhancements

See our online Product Bulletin for complete info on handy
e-mail tools. SafetyBar 4.0 is Cloudmark's latest version
of its SpamNet software, with some added features. SafetyBar
incorporates the same community participation as SpamNet to
protect against fraudulent e-mails and phishing scams, as
well as the regular spam SpamNet has always protected
against. Affini.net limits incoming e-mail to messages sent
from known senders or senders with a good reputation in the
Affini community. In addition, Affini is planning to expand
into an affinity network of approved members. ZAPaSPAM acts
in much the same way, with an option to send a challenge to
e-mail senders to verify their identity. You can also block
everyone but your whitelist names, or require a contact
specific authorization code. If you want to let more e-mail
through but still block spam, Mail Box Dispatcher 2.11 lets
you read the subject and beginning lines of a message before
deciding whether to download or delete it from the server.
The program also examines your delete habits to customize
message labeling. Lastly, Scientific Letter 1.50 lets users
include complex scientific equations in e-mail messages.
Compose equations using the built-in LaTeX editor and, once
sent, they can be opened in a LaTeX-aware app. For info on
other new products, see today's complete Product Bulletin.
