Dont Stop Now - Value Voters and the Future
BreakPoint with Charles Colson

Note: This commentary was delivered by Prison Fellowship President Mark Earley.

The buzz at the school bus stop on Wednesday was the election. Not only was there talk about the presidents reelection, but about the value voters who were instrumental in the victory.

Because of the influence of value voters, not only did President Bush win a clear mandate, garnering more votes than even Ronald Reagan, but he also won a mandate to focus on moral issues. This suggests that he will take an even stronger leadership on the values front.

As William Bennett wrote yesterday in National Review Online, President Bush now has a mandate to affect policy that will promote a more decent society, through both politics and law. His supporters want that, and have given him a mandate in their popular and electoral votes to see to it. Now is the time to begin our long, national cultural renewal . . . no less in legislation than in federal court appointments. It is, after all, the main reason George W. Bush was reelected.

I agree with Bill Bennett. Americans voted based on their moral convictions about issues like life and marriage. Now we need to capitalize on the momentum of those value voters by being even more active. We cant rely on politicians to do the work for us.

Take for example the question of same-sex marriage. The public has shown overwhelmingly where it stands. Every state that had a ballot initiativeincluding Oregonoverwhelmingly affirmed that marriage should be limited to one woman and one man. Thats a great victory, but we cant stop there.

People will continue to fight us on the grounds that we dont need a constitutional amendment. But we do, because the courts still pose a danger to marriage. No matter what President Bush is able to do by appointing the Supreme Court justices, the danger remains. Even if he replaces Chief Justice Rehnquist with a conservative, the Court is wedded to its Lawrence decision. And, if you follow the logic of Lawrence as Justice Scalia did in his dissent, it has put all moral legislationincluding all the state constitutional amendments with regard to traditional marriagein jeopardy.

The only way we are going to settle it once and for allcarrying out the will of the people in the processis by an amendment to the Constitution: the Federal Marriage Amendment.

So now is the time to talk to your senators and representative, newly elected or re-elected. Get their commitment that they not only support marriage, but they will specifically support a constitutional amendment. The people have expressed their will as plainly and clearly as it can be expressed. Members of Congress, as the representatives of the people, have a charge to carry out that will.

In addition to marriage, there is a host of other issues that are values-oriented. The appointment of federal judges is high on that list, as are many pro-life issues. But critically important today is to head the courts off at the pass, by passing the Federal Marriage Amendment. I believe we have the votes for it in the wake of this election. The value voters have spoken, and they want an amendment. And, with the presidents leadership, it can be done.
