Olson surprised UA picked No. 1
LOS ANGELES - Lute Olson is not often one to sandbag. If his UA basketball team is
good enough to win the Pac-10, he usually will not disguise it. But when the
conference announced yesterday that the Wildcats were picked to win the title in its
annual conference poll, Olson had to question it.

$1M stolen at Foothills home
Sheriff's detectives are investigating the second million-dollar burglary this fall
after discovering that antique furniture, artwork and a silver 2002 Lexus were stolen
from a Foothills home apparently while it was unoccupied but armed with a security
alarm. It's quite a contrast from September's million-dollar burglary, when the thief
entered the home through an unlocked door and made off with jewelry and cash while the
resident was asleep.

Stars & horses are her subjects
Robert Redford grinned handsomely as he galloped across his property in Sundance,
Utah, while photographer Linda Solomon tried to keep it together. Richard Gere's
appaloosa bucked and made her a little bit nervous as she snapped away with her
camera. Kim Novak's Haflinger, Hunka Hunka, chased Solomon around a green pasture and
tried to lick her, like a dog would. Those candid moments are the heart and soul of
the celebrity photographer's new book, "People We Know, Horses They Love" (Rodale,
$39.95).

surveys have shown that many people can't locate major countries in the news on a map.
The Star offers this weekly background to developing world news as a complement to our
daily coverage. This week: Costa Rica, Kenya, Iran, United Arab Emirates and Thailand.
