You should know that Mach2 does not use the encoders for motion 
control.  It only provides

Yes, you really need a dedicated encoder counter, especially if your 
machine moves
fast, or the encoders have high resolution.  The pulses can come too 
fast for software
to count without missing some.  Of course, Mach2 doesn't support 
hardware encoder
counters.  You should look at EMC, the only open software that supports 
servos with
position feedback to the PC.  See http://www.linuxcnc.org/
