Oh no, not at all. I'm in this situation because I'm getting married, 
and that's definitely cause for celebration.

I wrote about my situation to explore the topic you brought up with your 
response to the idea that "for sufficiently high amounts of money, 
almost *any* work situation is tenable." If I understood you correctly 
you were saying that how you live your life is more important to you 
than how much disposable income you have, and that leads you to make 
certain career choices. I found it interesting that, even though I have 
similar priorities, my need to distinguish between the short term and 
the long term leads me to different choices.

One of my favorite aspects of XP is the way it blends humanism and 
pragmatism. The goal is to produce working software and the practices 
are a means to that end. If we are acheiving our goal, why shouldn't 
work be a fun, fulfilling, soul-sustaining activity that enriches our 
lives rather than dominating them? Indeed, the practice of Energized 
Work suggests that those are exactly the circumstances under which we 
will achieve the goal most effectively.
