NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORK WORLD FUSION

By Jeff Caruso

With a certain option enabled, the Wi-Fi Protected Access
mechanism for securing wireless LANs can be even easier to crack
than its predecessor, which WPA was designed to correct. Well,
now an exploit has been published on the Web, and it's only a
matter of time before someone tries to use it.

New MyDoom variant exploits IE flaw

One cannot speak of security vulnerabilities without also
mentioning Microsoft - and today a new version of the MyDoom
worm has appeared to take advantage of an unpatched Microsoft
Internet Explorer vulnerability. Fortunately, certain Windows XP
users may be immune.

IPLocks reinforces security tool

Looking to help users protect corporate assets from theft, fraud
and other abuse, database-security software vendor IPLocks this
week announced a new version of its database monitoring,
assessment and analysis tool.

Deployment options put speech within reach

Like home construction alternatives, today's speech deployment
options range from the custom-built to the pre-built. It's
different from in the past, when companies had little choice but
to develop speech applications using one vendor's proprietary
platform and tools - aided in many cases by an army of
consultants.

Today on Layer 8, where there's frost on our pumpkins:

Boy sues mom for not buying him a PC; students steal school's
PCs, then try to hoc them on eBay; Gmail searching you for
illegal files?; and the winner of last week's caption contest
and the start of our next tilt; all this today and more at your
home for not-just-networking news.
