Great Free Software
Fed up with paying high prices for software that's full of
bugs? You don't have to. We've just put together an
exhaustive guide of the best free software on the Net. We've
uncovered everything from free Office alternatives (why pay
$500?) to great graphics tools, databases, programming
languages games and more. Don't miss our guide to the 21
best free programs on the Net--including my own personal
pick, Irfanview. It's simply the best picture viewer/light
editor available for love or money.

Novell, Microsoft Reconcile (Sort Of)
What's a little peace of mind worth? If you're Microsoft,
more than 500 million smackeroonies. That's what Big Green
just paid the former Big Red, to settle charges that date
from the Paleolithic age of computer networking. It's all
good, as far as Netware goes, but Provo versus Redmond
continues. Find out why the two companies are still meeting
in court, despite the greasing of the palm. Plus, our look
at what it all means - as Microsoft gets its IP house in
order.

Microsoft Is New Linux Sugar Daddy
Quick, who's done the most to advance the state of Linux and
Unix in 2005? The surprise answer, as uncovered by David
Coursey: Microsoft! What with the Novell repatriation and
the Sun deal, the company has poured millions into the
coffers of Linux boosters. What's it all mean? David has the
details in his column. Plus, we've got details on what all
of those Bill bucks may end up funding--the marketing of
Linux desktop, which just shipped.

The Worst IT Departments Ever
Want to know which companies are doing a bad job at managing
IT? Although we focused on the best in our latest Baseline
500, I asked for (and just got) a cut of the bottom
20--arguably the worst at managing IT spend. Find out how
Weirton Steel ended up with a negative-4,000 percent
productivity score, and what Solectron, Stillwater Mining
and Liberty Media have in common. Hint: It's not good.

The Fastest Supercomputer Ever
It's not a computer at all, according to the semiannual
Top500 directory of the fastest computers on the planet.
Instead, clustered supercomputers took the top spots. We've
got details on who came in fastest, topping out at 70.2
teraflops. It's an amazing result, but it'll soon seem as
pokey as an Apple IIe, according to the developer. Plus,
we've got a look at why other benchmarks may actually give a
clearer picture of true performance, and details on what
Sun, Dell, HP and IBM announced--all in our supercomputing
special report.

Nifty Phones from Nokia's Secret Show
We weren't supposed to be there. But our undercover phone
analyst snuck into Nokia's recent super-secret unveiling of
the newest phone lineup. But we didn't get caught, and now
you, too, can see what we found. We've got pictures of
everything, from the slab-shaped 7710 PDA killer to the
5140--with built-in GPS--and a kid-friendly 3220. These are
the phones you'll want next year--if they show up in the
United States at all.

Bluetooth Is Creepy
And that's why it won't ever take off, says John C. Dvorak.
It's not about the PAN; it's about getting rid of wires.
Find out why he thinks Bluetooth is all wrong--and what
could make it right--in his latest rant.

Thinking of making over your kitchen? It's only the most
popular place in the house! Well, we've got details on how
to do just that, including protecting your computer from
water and grease, what software makes sense, and how to tie
it all together. Oh, and it's not just about recipes
anymore. I wired up my kitchen, and I love it!

Here Comes 'Halo 2'
If "Halo" was combat evolved, then "Halo 2" must be combat
overhyped. But surprisingly, according to our reviewers, the
game actually lives up its hype. All around the office,
bleary-eyed gamers are stumbling around after playing the
Xbox game 'round the clock all weekend. Find out what's
great, and what's not, in our detailed coverage.

A Radically Different Small Form Factor PC
We've all seen those breadbox PCs from Shuttle, Falcon and
the rest. They're certainly cool-looking, but the shape is
pretty dull. Now, here comes FIC with a nifty new shape for
its Condor barebones PC (just add processor, memory and
drives). It's nifty-looking and really performs, according
to our review. Looking for a smaller system? Check this one
out before you buy anything!

iPod Market Share Drops
Steve Jobs must be ready to jump off the roof at Infinity
Drive--or sharpening up the headman's ax. Apple's ubiquitous
iPod has finally stumbled, according to the NPD group. Its
market share has tumbled dramatically. Find out how far it's
fallen, and why it's probably not as big a deal as I'm
making it out to be, in our story.

Whatever Happened to Flying Cars?
Remember the future? In the past, it was supposed to be so
much shinier. We would all be living on Mars (or at least in
cyberspace). ExtremeTech's Loyd Case wants to know why the
future didn't turn out like we were promised.
