The Collier County Health Department faced an onslaught of telephone calls Tuesday, promptly starting at 9 a.m. when it activated a phone bank system for people to call and schedule an appointment to get the flu shot. Many people couldn�t get through because there was no hold-on-the-line capability, exacerbating an already frustration-filled flu season. NEW FEDERAL QUOTA TO AFFECT GROUPER FRESHNESS Seafood lovers who like their grouper fresh off the fishing boat could be in for some disappointment at the dinner table. A new grouper quota is prompting federal fisheries regulators to close down commercial grouper fishing in federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico starting at 12:01 a.m. Monday, cutting off the Gulf supply of the Southwest Florida favorite until Jan. 1. VOTERS OK TRIO OF MEDICAL MALPRACTICE AMENDMENTS Florida voters had their say on three constitutional amendments addressing medical malpractice; now the lawyers, the courts and state legislators will battle over what it all means. Floridians readily approved three changes to the state constitution to limit contingency fees of plaintiffs� attorneys in medical malpractice cases, open up hospital records of adverse incidents, and revoke the licenses of physicians with three malpractice judgments against them. SETTLEMENT REACHED IN WEEKS FAMILY LAND DISPUTE The drawn-out land dispute and the ensuing legal battle among members of the Weeks family have finally ended with the parties reaching a settlement. The lawyers representing both sides filed a joint motion for dismissal on Oct. 27, asking for �dismissal with prejudice,� meaning neither party would be allowed to file any more lawsuits on the issue. The Florida Baptist Convention, holding its 150th annual meeting, approved without discussion the resolution by the Rev. Jay Dennis, pastor of the First Baptist Church at the Mall in Lakeland.
