CALLS TO SCHEDULE FLU SHOTS OVERWHELM COUNTYS PHONES
Another glitch strikes this years flu season; this time blame a lack of
telephone technology. The Collier County Health Department faced an onslaught
of telephone calls Tuesday, promptly starting at 9 a.m. when it activated a
phone bank system for people to call and schedule an appointment to get the flu
shot. Many people couldnt get through because there was no hold-on-the-line
capability, exacerbating an already frustration-filled flu season.

NEW FEDERAL QUOTA TO AFFECT GROUPER FRESHNESS
Seafood lovers who like their grouper fresh off the fishing boat could be in
for some disappointment at the dinner table. A new grouper quota is prompting
federal fisheries regulators to close down commercial grouper fishing in
federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico starting at 12:01 a.m. Monday, cutting off
the Gulf supply of the Southwest Florida favorite until Jan. 1.

VOTERS OK TRIO OF MEDICAL MALPRACTICE AMENDMENTS
Florida voters had their say on three constitutional amendments addressing
medical malpractice; now the lawyers, the courts and state legislators will
battle over what it all means. Floridians readily approved three changes to the
state constitution to limit contingency fees of plaintiffs attorneys in
medical malpractice cases, open up hospital records of adverse incidents, and
revoke the licenses of physicians with three malpractice judgments against
them.

lawyers representing both sides filed a joint motion for dismissal on Oct. 27,
asking for dismissal with prejudice, meaning neither party would be allowed
to file any more lawsuits on the issue.

IN PERSPECTIVE:
MARTIN SCHRAM: WINNING UGLY
We Americans looked into a mirror on the first Tuesday of this month. And that
is how we got the news that we are ugly. We discovered that we are a nation
where ugly works and ugly rules. We all but insist that our political
candidates act ugly toward each other just to get our attention. And our
votes. In Campaign 2004, thats how all the players played the game.

IN NEAPOLITAN:
CRANBERRIES AND TURKEY ARE MADE FOR EACH OTHER
Theirs was a culinary marriage made in heaven. The delicious but mild and bland
meat of the turkey needed a partner to add zest and color to holiday feasts.
The cranberry has been a tradition at American tables ever since. The turkey
couldnt have picked a more appropriate accompaniment. After all, the cranberry
is a native American fruit. There are only three native American fruits:
Concord grapes, blueberries and cranberries.
