NETFLASH: BREAKING NEWS FROM NETWORK WORLD FUSION

By Jeff Caruso

After viruses and spam, the next big threat to corporate
networks could be spyware. Not only does spyware lift personal
information, it also can steal cycles from PCs that should be
used for corporate applications and redirect browsers to
alternate Web sites. The problem right now is that there is no
one definition of spyware - and there are very few options for
dealing with spyware at the corporate network level. But that's
all changing, as we report in this week's story.

Microsoft to launch search engine technology

The search for more money has led Bill Gates & Co. to search
engines. Tomorrow, the company's first entry into the market
will go live on Microsoft's MSN Web site.

Companies target IM, peer-to-peer threats

Real-time communications vendors Akonix and FaceTime this week
are expected to beef up their security gateways to lock down the
avenues that viruses and malware travel using instant messaging
and peer-to-peer programs.

Cisco hits analysts' Q1 expectations

Cisco posted fiscal 2005 first quarter results in line with
analyst predictions. For the period ended Oct. 30, net sales
were $6.0 billion, compared with $5.1 billion for the first
quarter of fiscal 2004, an increase of 17.1%. Sales were up 0.8%
sequentially from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2004.
