Here's what's new on StarNet, the online service of the Arizona Daily Star:

Veterans groups need infusion of youth
Daniel Rowland doesn't look like a member of an endangered species as he swings
into the parking lot of a local veterans hall, rap music blaring from his shiny
Chevy Tracker. But as he hops out, the baby-faced Afghanistan vet ditches his
backward baseball cap for the embroidered folding hat worn by members of the
Veterans of Foreign of Wars. Then he takes his place among a circle of
silver-haired comrades.

Indian youth reach deep
Fourth-grader Cruz Yucupicio tells a marvelous story about a handsome little
boy named ... well, Cruz ... who finds a magic gill and goes to live under the
water. He writes of an ocean that tastes like saladitos, the mouth-puckering
salted plums of Latino tradition. There's a good chance these images would have
remained locked in the 10-year-old's brain had it not been for ArtsReach, a
nonprofit program dedicated to increasing the positive self-image of American
Indian students through creative writing.

Greg Hansen: Arizona State lands one, loses one
In a Tucson context, a sports pipeline is popularly thought to be Jason Terry
and Michael Dickerson leaving Seattle to play basketball for Lute Olson. Or
all-conference football safeties Chuck Cecil, Allan Durden and Jeff
Hammerschmidt following one another from San Diego's Helix High School to the
UA secondary. But the most prolific sports pipeline in this town, as much as
you might not want to hear it, is Sunnyside High School wrestlers to Arizona
State.

Bridget Jones sequel: Ribald? Clever? Quirky? Fun? You bet!
British accent back in full effect, Renée Zellweger tries on Bridget once
again in "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," which, like "Bridget Jones's
Diary" (2001), came from a Helen Fielding novel. The comedic tale is a
sometimes painful, consistently amusing deconstruction of Bridget's tortured
soul, which cannot exist without pain.
