Mozilla Firefox Ships

Yes, Virginia, there is a viable alternative to Internet
Explorer. It's the new Firefox browser, and from all of our
extensive analysis, it's a home run. If you're looking for a
safer and simpler browsing experience, look no further than
this fantastic, and free, product. We've got an in-depth
review of Firefox, an analysis of 10 of the best add-ins and
more in our team coverage of the Firefox launch--including
how the browser was patched in less than a day to fix a
security flaw. And if you're waiting for Google's rumored
browser, don't hold your breath--it's a chimera, according
to our report.

The Empire Strikes Back

Microsoft's not standing still, though. We've just learned
that the company is working on an accelerated refresh of
Internet Explorer, to effectively deliver a new version
before Longhorn. Can they do it? Our story details what's
under way, and what needs to get done.

Microsoft Search Launches

But that's not all Big Green has up its sleeve. Today,
Microsoft launches the beta of its own search engine--which
will replace Yahoo's Overture in the process. The new
Microsoft search is aimed squarely at Google, however, but
it does not include desktop search (at least not yet). For
details on what's there, and how to try it yourself, see our
story.

Google Attacks Microsoft with E-Mail

Not sitting still, the brainiacs at Google have added POP3
support to Gmail, which is also still officially in beta.
What's that mean? You no longer need to use Google's
interface to read and manage your Gmail inbox--now you can
use other Web interfaces, and even Outlook and Outlook
Express. What else will Google include before the free mail
service launches? We've got all of the details in our
update, along with a story about what the search engines had
to say in response.

Yahoo, Google, MSN and AOL Deliver Tainted, Misleading
Search Results

That's the conclusion of a new study, which finds them in
direct violation of government requirements. It seems that
most search engines just don't do a good enough job of
distinguishing between paid and "natural" search engine
results. The study shows that all of the biggies are
fundamentally flawed, including Google, Yahoo, and even AOL
and Lycos. Will MSN search do a better job? Don't count on
it. We've got details on the impeccable credentials of the
research group, and what it found, along with what the
search engines themselves had to say in response.

The Best B-Minus Cell Phones Ever

The phone industry calls them "feature phones," to
differentiate them from the "smart phone." Like a lot of us,
they're more B-minus than straight A. But a B-minus can
still do a lot, including downloading applications, playing
games and much more. We've selected the best B-minus phones
from each of the major carriers. If you want to upgrade to
color, photo and programmability, we've got the right phone
for you--whether it's T-Mobile/AT&T, Verizon, Cingular,
Nextel or Sprint.

iPod Photo Review: No Longer King of the Hill

The iPod strays into new territory, and suddenly it's not
the best of the bunch anymore. We love the iPod Photo for
its music-playing abilities. But when it comes to showing
off photos and other media chores, it's simply not the best.
Find out what we liked, and what we didn't, in our hands-on
review of Apple's new iPod Photo.

Another Dumb Idea from AOL

And it was doing so well, too. AOL recently has cleaned up
its act, delivering a service that's useful for a wide range
of computer novices and "B-minus" users. But then it took a
turn for the worse, returning to its annoying roots. That's
the conclusion of PC Magazine site editor Lance Ulanoff, who
says enough's enough! Read his rant and find out why the AOL
of new is beginning to resemble the bad, bad AOL of old.

The Fastest DVD Burners Ever

Should you upgrade to a 16x DVD burner? Is all of that speed
really worthwhile? What's it do for you in the end? To
answer those questions, we put five of the newest and
fastest DVD burners on the planet to the PCMag test. What
did we find? You'll have to read our story for details, but
in the end ...

Thin Clients Return from the Grave

No, it's not a leftover Halloween story. Remember the old
"thin client," a Frankenstein-type combination of terminals
and Web browsers? They're back, in the guise of Tarantella
Inc. What's going on here? Is this ghoulish tale ever going
to end? We've got the creepy details in our story.

Oracle Ready to Dump PeopleSoft

That's the late-breaking word from Oracle CEO Larry Ellison
himself. PeopleSoft's board is ready to reject the final
offer, and now Oracle wants out. Why not, it got what it
wanted all along by wounding a major competitor and toppling
a significant rival. Brilliant. Dirty pool, but brilliant
nevertheless. We've got details on the beginning of the end.
