In 2000 I stayed in campgrounds around Temple, Texas (north of Austin) that were run by the Corps of Engineers and were free. A fish and game warden told me there was discussion about charging in the future so check first before you go. My favorite campground was right on the lake--one camp spot had showers. These campgrounds were not advertised and I just happened upon one. Clicker
