You will probably have had many other responses before I get back to
you. I spent from October, or so, until May one winter a few years ago
at the Slabs.
I suggest you consider following my approach for the first trip to the
Slabs. Spend the first night parked in front of the Range. Unless you
belong to one of the groups at the Slabs and get in early in the day.
If you get in late in the day, easiest is to park at the Range. If that
area is full, no big deal, continue a few hundred feet further east and
on the right is plenty of open space. Fire up a generator if you have
one. Same for in front of the Range.
After you turn east on Main Street in Niland, three miles or so later,
you will cross a canal and see an old guardhouse on the right. It was
painted brown when I was there. Continue on east and Salvation Mountain
will be on your right. Drive on and you will go up a hill. Topping the
hill look on your left for a blue building. That will be the chapel. It
sits at the junction of the road you is on and Low Road. Continue
driving and keep you eyes on the right, a few hundred yards, and you
will see a big sign The Range. Pull into the parking area in front and
park for the day and night.
Monitor CB Ch23, especially at 6PM when Linda does the daily follies,
or she did when I was there.
Fresh water is available in town at two or three places. Dump: there is
one at the Chamber of Commerce, three bucks when I was there. Fill
fresh water. Or two miles south of Calipatria, six miles or so south of
Niland, on left heading south a state rest area with free dump and
fresh water, free.
