A Triumph for Democracy
—Ken Blackwell

As political scientists and journalists pour over endless statistics gauging voter trends relative to the 2004 Presidential election, here's a number you may not have heard much about: 23 ... that's the number of lawsuits filed against the Ohio secretary of state's office in the weeks leading up to the election.

Every aspect of the Buckeye state's election process was placed under the microscope of attorneys, journalists and bloggers. Despite the scrutiny, voters took responsibility and acted with civility, showing the true strength of our democracy.

Ohio, in fact, did not become "The Next Florida." The election was ultimately and clearly decided by more than five-and-a-half million Ohio voters--and not attorneys and judges.

An election decided by voters ... what a novel concept! That's democracy, the way it was meant to be.
