** ARTICLE: Supercharge Your Learning Power: A 10-Minute Self-Test
written by Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler **
-----------------------------------------------------------

Science has identified several ways to improve learning, memory, and
intelligence. But still the most powerful method is to stimulate your
brain with new challenges.

In short ... LEARN NEW TRICKS! And along the way, build increased mind
power!

Because either your brain is thriving and growing ... or it's suffering
actual physical atrophy!

Either you stimulate and build your brainpower, memory, and intelligence,
or it goes by the wayside! We now know that mental atrophy is NOT limited
to old age!

** Can "Old Dogs" Learn New Tricks?
As adults, our brains develop through an active "connection" process.

As we challenge our brains by learning a new skill or information, our
neurons (brain cells) join together into increasingly complex "neural
networks." Your brain power increases as the complexity of your neural
connections increases.

And the latest neuroscience findings have proven that it's never too late
to improve your ability to learn and remember.

Age is not a factor because the brain, unlike any other organ in the body,
can continue to perform better and better right into advanced age. It does
not automatically begin to "wear down" like our other physical organs.

Recent research has even established that even early stage Alzheimer's
patients can improve their ability to learn and remember. So age is no
excuse for letting your brain fall into disuse.

** How Learning Builds your Brain
Years of research have proven that your brain, just like your muscles,
also physically improves with exercise.

Laboratory (rat) research by Dr. Marion Diamond, for example, clearly
demonstrated that virtually every learning experience creates new, and
increasingly complex, physical neural connections.

And Diamond's post-mortem studies of Einstein's brain extended her
findings directly to the human brain. She found that Einstein's brain
differed in only one way from the "average" human brain. Like Diamond's
"learning-enriched" rats, Einstein's brain also had an above-average
density of interconnections among his neurons (brain cells).

And get this! NO ONE is born with such a "highly connected" brilliant
brain! It's created by learning!

Learning any new skill builds the complexity of your brain's neural
networks. But likewise if you stop learning, the connections to these
networks are "pruned away," and your brain suffers a loss of complexity
and refinement.

** Mind Power Strategies
Here's some proven ways to sharpen your mental edge:

(1) Exercise and build your memory, and you will increase your primary
intelligence. Increased memory creates a superior ability to access the
information stored in your brain. Plus, a sharp memory increases your
ability to build even more neural interconnections.

(2) Study music. PET scan studies have shown that musicians have more
developed "higher brain capacity" than non-musicians. Musical training
stimulates the development of complex brain circuitry.

(3) Listen to music you enjoy to enhance your mental performance. Simply
listening to music you enjoy activates portions of the frontal lobes and
limbic cortex (feeling areas) on both sides of the brain. This encourages
a "whole brain" higher state of intelligence.

(4) Develop a taste for Mozart. Studies with college students have shown
that even short-term exposure to Mozart's "Sonata for Two Pianos"
immediately increases the brain's ability to solve creative problems.
Other studies have also proven that listening to Mozart actually raises
one's IQ and brain functioning.

(5) Adopt a form of mental relaxation. Occasional stress is actually good
for your mind -- and your immune system. BUT ... unbroken chronic stress
causes actually brain damage. The hormones secreted in response to stress
reduce the size of your hippocampus -- an important memory-related brain
structure. Relaxation, on the other hand, enhances your brain functions.

(6) Build balance in your legs to exercise your brain's coordination and
balance centers. The ancient Chinese slow-movement exercise of tai chi is
excellent for this.

(7) Increase your mental "response-ability." Modern technology has brought
us some amazing devices, including brain-wave engineered CDs, and
mind-enhancing software programs. Research has provided proof of
measurable improvements in memory, clarity of thought, speed of response,
and general mental sharpness.

(8) Learn how YOU learn BEST. Modern learning experts now know that
everyone does NOT learn the same way. Instead of struggling to fit
yourself into an inappropriate learning method - determine what your
mind's preferred learning technique is, and use it!

** ARTICLE: 10 Principles To Keeping An On-Going Journal written by
Ruth Folit **
-----------------------------------------------------------

There are no hard-set rules for keeping a journal. How often you write,
how much time you spend, and how rigorously you maintain a regular
journaling schedule are matters of personal choice and circumstance. What
seems a comfortable writing schedule for one may seem unbearably formal to
another. And while an individual living alone may have hours of solitude
and enormous flexibility in terms of time, a parent with small children
may have very little of either. So it is of primary importance to find
what works for you. The following general guidelines, however, may help
you to establish journal writing as a regular and enduring habit.

1. Allow yourself regular writing times. Find a time of day that works
well for you and use this time every day. As much as possible, control
interruptions during this time.

2. Provide yourself a peaceful place to work. If you need an uncluttered
space, try to clear your work area before sitting down to write.

3. Develop a centering ritual. Associating journaling with another
pleasurable habit can help to strengthen the routine and create an
atmosphere of self-nurturing. When you are ready to write in your journal,
consider pouring yourself a cup of tea or coffee. Play relaxing music.
Take a moment for meditation, deep breathing, or simply relax and sit
quietly for a few minutes. Read a quotation or a passage of poetry. Listen
to a guided meditation tape.

4. Prompt yourself with a routine self-reflection question: If you tend to
have trouble starting, prompt yourself with a routine question, such as
What are you feeling right now?? or Whats on your mind?? Anais Nin
suggests asking what feels vivid, warm, or near to you at the moment??
Another way: I feel, I need, and I want??

5. Write because you want to write, not because you have to. Dont allow
journaling to become an obligation or chore. Remember not to demand more
of yourself than you can give. If you have missed a day, or several days,
accept that journaling, like life, is imperfect and go on. Write the next
time you have a chance.

6. Create a positive feedback loop. As you continue to use the journal as
an opportunity to be with and learn about yourself, you will find that the
practice gains a momentum of its own. Discovering your own hidden depths
piques your curiosity and stimulates you to continue, setting up a
positive feedback loop between your conscious and unconscious mind.

7. Emphasize process rather than product. An important purpose of journal
writing is simply expressing and recording your thoughts and feelings.
Concentrate on the process of writingkeeping the flow of words rather
than worrying about the end result. If your goal is to have a specific
audience read your piece, go back to it later and edit it. Use your
journal as the raw material for more polished writing.

8. Use well crafted journal writing tools such as LifeJournal, personal
journal writing software. LifeJournal takes you far beyond pen-and-paper
journal writing or word processing programs. Easy-to-use and attractive
features make LifeJournal perfect for both novice and seasoned journal
writers. The Daily Pulse lets you keep track of your mood, health, energy
and stress levels. Quotes and Prompts spark ideas for you to write about
if youre looking for inspiration. A Life History timeline helps you build
an autobiography slowly and steadily, anecdote by anecdote. The powerful
search function lets you find journal entries by keyword, topic, daily
pulse, date, and kind of journal entry. There is information about journal
writing techniques built right into the program. And although LifeJournal
is intuitive to use there is a full help section and tutorial.

9. Learn from your own experiences. After just a few weeks or months of
keeping a journal, go back to earlier journal entries. See how youve
changed. Look for patterns and correlations between your stress levels and
your health. How does stress affect your energy levels? See what helped
your general mood improve by opening up journal entries that precede an
increase in your mood ratings. Learn from your own experiences. Use the
objectivity of time to review your life from a different perspective that
you had when you wrote the journal entries.

10. Have fun!! Journal writing is its own reward. Once you get started,
your journal will become another one of your good friendsone who is
always available and has the time to listen attentively.

** BOOK REVIEW: Janice VanCleave's The Human Body for Every Kid: Easy
Activities That Make Learning Science Fun By Janice VanCleave **
-----------------------------------------------------------

Grade 5-7. This science activity book not only provides simple,
easy-to-follow demonstrations, but also is a solid resource for learning
about the workings of the human body. Projects utilize readily available
materials, but an additional person is often needed as an assistant or a
guinea pig. The basics of cell structure; the senses; the respiratory,
circulation, digestive, and skeletal systems; and genetics are covered.
Each section provides a careful explanation of the activity, background
information needed to understand the concepts involved, step-by-step
instructions, and an analysis of the solution. The text is clearly
written; simple, black line drawings and diagrams are used throughout.
Robert Gardner's Science Projects About the Human Body (Enslow, 1993)
contains similar material, but Van Cleave's book is more thorough in
explaining concepts and getting students involved. A useful addition to
science-experiment sections.
