Today's focus: The real impetus for offshoring

By Jeff Caruso

The real impetus for offshoring

Offshore outsourcing could largely be blamed on - or credited
to, depending on your perspective - the great strides we in the
network industry have made over the last decade. As Tom Nolle
points out in his Reality Check column, it's the insanely low
cost of networking that is making possible the transfer of
information-related jobs to other countries. Now, what do we do
about it?

Rethinking sales

It's difficult to sell to IT buyers - because, frankly, they
don't want to be sold to in the ways that salespeople have
traditionally sold products. They hate cold calls. They hate
pressure sales. Yet salespeople are continuing to use these
tactics, says independent consultant Edward Horrell. So what
should IT salespeople do?

Suits settled and unsettled

Novell got a big fat check from Microsoft to settle its lawsuit
over NDS for Windows NT. Find out why Microsoft had to settle in
NetWare Newsletter author Dave Kearns' Wired Windows column.
(And why Microsoft didn't have to settle a different lawsuit
from Novell.)

Parting shots

As the 2004 election goes into the history books, Paul McNamara
devotes this week's 'Net Buzz column to a few electronic aspects
that may have impacts on future elections. Besides the obvious
scrutiny of e-voting machines, McNamara evaluates Meetup.com's
political efforts, as well as those of VotePair.org.
