Microsoft is miffed that a research group published 10 new flaws found in Windows XP Service Pack 2. The discoverers obviously think they're performing a public service, but Microsoft clearly wishes researchers would meet with it privately to reveal such findings, letting the company quietly deliver updates and fixes. What do you think? Does publicizing a vulnerability lead to a rash of new viruses? What should researchers and security firms do when they discover new Windows flaws? Tell us your thoughts in the forum. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119090-0-0-0-1 IN THIS ISSUE: * Review: iPod Photo: Just Shy of Greatness * Show Preview: Just a Taste of CES * Review: MSN Search Beta Prepares to Battle Google * Review: Speed and Output Quality, Together Again * Opinion: Scanners are Not Dead * Review: Set Up Your Own Private P2P Network ============================================================ Review: iPod Photo: Just Shy of Greatness The Apple iPod remains the premiere digital music player, and the latest edition, the iPod Photo, adds long-awaited photo-viewing capability, but it isn't quite as on the mark as other siblings, like the Mini, have been. Although the new model has an attractive color screen and photo-display capability, it's surprisingly limited in the ways it lets you view images. We have the full review, as well as new photos. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119093-0-0-0-1 ============================================================ Show Preview: Just a Taste of CES The Consumer Electronics Show is now the most eagerly anticipated yearly event in high tech, so when we heard we could get an early peek at the wares some companies would be showing in January, we couldn't resist. Although the preview turned out to be a bit underwhelming, it did offer glimpses of some things we'd never seen or heard of before. We have a full report. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119096-0-0-0-1 ============================================================ Review: MSN Search Beta Prepares to Battle Google Companies like Inktomi have long carried MSN Search's water, providing indexes and searching algorithms, with Microsoft merely adding an interface The new MSN Search beta is something entirely different. It features a homegrown search algorithm, an index provided by its own crawler, and, in some key areas, more controls than Google. Is it a Google killer? Read our full review and take the visual tour for our answer. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119099-0-0-0-1 ============================================================ Review: Speed and Output Quality, Together Again The HP LaserJet 2420dn monochrome laser printer is good monochrome printer that could be great, except for one thing--although it's fast, has great graphics, and even does duplexing, it stumbles on paper handling. How big a problem is this? Read our full review for more details. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119102-0-0-0-1 ============================================================ Opinion: Scanners are Not Dead If you ask Contributing Editor Bill Howard, there has never been a better time to buy a scanner. Not just because the prices are great, but also because of the great technology that's in so many of them. Howard looks at the best examples and concludes that these venerable tools deserve a fresh look. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119105-0-0-0-1 ============================================================ Review: Set Up Your Own Private P2P Network So you were scared off by the Kazaa and Morpheus and the associated controversy over illegal file sharing, but sharing files with friends still intrigues you. Grouper Beta 1.0 could be the answer. It's a free peer-to-peer app, but instead of building a network peopled by millions of anonymous users, it allows you and 29 of your friends, family, and coworkers to share images, files and, perhaps music (is that legal?). You'll want to learn more about this intriguing and promising software. http://ct.enews.pcmag.com/rd/cts?d=184-1249-1-53-371668-119108-0-0-0-1 ============================================================ The PCMag.com Bookstore PC Magazine's Windows XP Solutions Ever wish they'd consulted you before they designed Windows XP?
