A Clear Message to Candidates
—Michael Medved
In the presidential election, the American people sent a clear message to all future candidates: Don't ever lie to us about the truth of our own lives. John Kerry repeatedly said we suffered from "the worst economy since the Great Depression" but the public knew from first hand experience it wasn't true.
One little noted revelation from exit polling showed that only 28 percent of the public described their personal financial situation as "worse than four years ago"--nearly three-quarters of Americans felt they were doing better--or just as well--as under the Clinton administration. Amazingly, only one-in-five listed "jobs and the economy" as their chief concern when they went to vote.
Appropriately, official figures three days after the election showed soaring job growth for the month of October--some 337,000 new jobs. Pundits and politicos may prattle endlessly about gloom and doom, but most Americans want to get to work and ignore them.
