She said that I was the only notary in the area that she was looking for. This worked out for me as well as the law office section of the accounting firm that I am employed with. They were looking for a DC Attorney and were having problems finding one that would go out to the person's home -- so now they have a referral from me thanks to you! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ (Received via Telephone) I purchased your book How to Start a Bankruptcy Forms Processing Service and wanted to call you to let you know I absolutely love it. In fact, I already have my first attorney customer. Let me tell you what happened: After reading the book I set up an appointment to meet with a local bankruptcy attorney. Before going into the meeting, I bowed my head and prayed for God�s help. I asked Him to make the attorney receptive to me and give me the job if it be His will. God answered my prayer! When I met with the attorney I didn�t even need to talk very much. The attorney did all the talking. He hired me as a freelance bankruptcy forms processor and is having me come to his office for training next week. Not only did I get my first customer, but this attorney plays a major role in the Bankruptcy Court. If I do a good job for him, I am sure I will get a lot of work in the future. I just wanted to tell all your readers that there REALLY is a big need for freelance bankruptcy forms processors. People need to read and study your bankruptcy book because it is a gold mine that can open up a lot of doors. As I have stated many times before. I am a firm believer that God put us on this planet for a reason. That purpose is to effect the lives of others in a positive way according to God�s will and purpose. We all know that God is a loving God so naturally His will and purpose is only for the good of others. I thank and praise the Lord Jesus Christ for allowing the words I write to be understood by so many people. But what is more important is that people are taking the information and implementing the tools to build successful companies. Therefore all of you deserve a big pat on the back and I pray for God�s continued blessings in your life. It is a wonderful resource for starting as a NSA or even as an experienced NSA. I do have a question for you if you can help me with the answer. I have been working independently using my personal name as a part-time NSA and reporting my income on a 1099 along with my personal taxes. I would now like to start expanding and doing business under a business name and not use my personal name. I want to know the business and tax requirements. Do I need to file for a business license and a DBA and then file my notary income taxes separately under the DBA. Is there anything else I need to do? I would really appreciate your professional feedback. Thank you very much in advance for you help. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you plan to continue operating as a sole-proprietor and not hire employees (you can always hire freelancers instead) you don�t need to do anything except keep track of your income and expenses, and then provide this information on Schedule C to file with your individual tax returns. You can file for a business license at your local state courthouse if you wish but it often is not required unless you hire employees. If you decide you must have one, just contact the courthouse and ask them for the form. It may even be available online. When asked for the �type� of business you own � it would be classified as a sole-proprietorship. But before you determine a name for your business, you should check to see if the domain name is available on the internet. For instance, when I named my company 50 State Notary, I made sure that www.50statenotary.com was available as a domain name first. A business license is also important for protecting the name of your company in the state where you live. In other words, if you named your company Signing Services of California, you may not want to risk the chance of someone else in California opening up a business under the same name. This would confuse your customers. That is why many people who provide personal services will name their companies with their own personal name. For example: John Doe�s Signing Service. For the future � when you read or hear information relating to starting and operating a small business, make sure you understand what direction that person is coming from before you accept their advice as gospel. Instead of going through the time and expense of obtaining a business license and changing the way you do your taxes, call the courthouse where you live or the IRS and explain your situation. They will tell you if you qualify to obtain a business license in your state since you do not have any employees. ________________________________________________ ������������������������������������������������ ������������������������������������������������ THE NATIONAL NOTARY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE In the last issue of The Notary News I announced that 50 State Notary will be one of the sponsors at the National Notary Association Conference to be held May 31 � June 3, 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada. I received a few emails from subscribers asking me how they could sign up and attend. The NNA will offer online registration after December 15 but for the latest information visit http://www.nationalnotary.org/conf/index.cfm?text=conf2005 The 2004 conference was held in Philadelphia PA, with approximately 700 attendees. But since the 2005 conference is being held in Las Vegas, it will be more convenient for the California notaries to attend this year, so I anticipate a larger number in attendance. Because 50 State Notary is now participating as a sponsor of this event, we will have a booth where you can stop by, visit and pick up a free package of information. I am really looking forward to meeting many of the subscribers in person.
