I've just joined with the intention of taking the "news" version. If this
reaches then it works!

Just to take a up points I've been reading before joining....

The first is that I can now read before joining, so one aspect of the "old
rules" has gone, as I discovered that you have the list set up not to allow
non-members to see archived messages, but the news archives is available to
anyone with access to the server or, presumably (I haven't checked), the
various archiving sites referred to on the gmane site.

I also read Bruce's post saying that you are not a moderator but a manager.
Again, this is no longer strictly true, as under nntp protocol
news://gmane.recreation.canals is a moderated group (At least that is what
Outlook Express tells me, and it would tie in with what I understand is
enforced on you by the way you have set up the canals-list account at
gmane). So that's another "old rule" that has changed.

However, I'm glad that I picked up the existence of the group (from
news:uk.rec.waterways) and trust that the new "gateway" won't be the cause
of the great Dral/Mabbett flame war of 1998 again!

Looking forward to joining in here - and still planning to get the Waterways
Guide site updated sometime real soon! :-)
