As you've probably already learnt, what happened was that a dredging
contractor breached a culvert pusssing under the canal a little was south of
Cowley lock.
The latest news from BW last evening was that an attempt to plug the hole
without draining the canal has failed. They were letting boats through
until 4pm yesterday and had contacted as many boats as they could north of
there and told them about the deadline. Temporary dams were due to go in
either side of the breach at 6am today, and by this afternoon BW hope to
have pumped the section dry enough to be able to assess the damage and work
out whether the stoppage will need to be for days or for weeks.
John Guest, who's running the operation, has a good track-record for
emergency repairs just before events.
As you may guess, Canalway Cavalcade organisers are distinctly on edge!
