It is certainly very strange how things work out.  In researching my family tree I discovered that my Great Grandfather and Great Uncle work on the barges on the run to Lincoln.  The census also gave their address which was by the Foss Dyke, in Lincoln, been boating past it for years and never knew.

Sites that I have found useful include:
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ for birth marriage and death. Free
http://www.1837online.com/ got a full range of cencus plus other info. Pay
http://www.censusuk.co.uk/ Free access to 1881 cencus.
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/ A good site, affiliated with the National Archives. Pay
http://www.cyndislist.com/ A massive list of genealogy sites
http://www.familysearch.org/ The Mormon Church site, free and extensive.

Hope that some of these sites help.

Funny how these things work out, isn't it? I got a call this evening from a
distant relative researching my great grandfather who was one of the BEF and
killed in the 1st WW. She's been doing a family history and it seems my
ancestor John Hoden (b 1767) was one of the earliest boatmen. Another
relative, William Hoden (b 1836) was the ferryman at Sawley. Blimey! We
haven't come very far, have we?

Anyone done this sort of work before and know where I can follow up these
people?

Steve
