THE INLAND WATERWAYS PROTECTION

                             WIGAN PIER

    10.30 am Saturday 3rd June                         OS. 108  SD576052

As no car-shuffle is necessary, we will meet at the later time of 10.30
at  Wigan Pier. For those travelling by road, Wigan Pier is well
signed by  means of brown tourist signs and is very near to the
centre of Wigan.  Street parking is available opposite the pier and
there is also a large car  park which appears to be FREE. Beware
the one-way traffic system! For  those travelling by train, Wigan Pier
is just a few minutes walk from both  the North Western (for trains
from Euston, Crewe, Preston and  Liiverpool) and Wallgate (for trains
from Manchester, Southport and  Kirkby) railway stations. Walk
downhill on Wallgate, under the railway,  and continue on Wallgate
until you reach the pier on the left. The bus  station, between Market
Street and Hallgate is only slightly further away.

Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the visitor attractions at the
pier  are not open on Saturdays. However, there are still points of
interest to  see before we begin our walk. The first section follows the
Leeds/Liverpool canal as it gradually rises up through 21 locks. Here
the  tow path is constructed from block paving and makes for easy
    walking.

On the day of the recce we lunched at Kirkless Hall, a canal side
hostelry. The food wasn’t the best pub grub we had ever had but the
dining area is designated smoke free, there are outside tables for
good  weather, and they serve Jennings Cocker Hoop and
Burtonwood Ales.  There is another hostelry nearby.

After this point in the walk, (about 3.5 miles) there is a nearby bus
stop  for anyone wishing to return to Wigan. The walk continues
along the  canal before turning off into Haigh Hall Country Park, once
the home of  the Earls of Crawford and Balcarres. The route passes
the hall and  follows a woodland path to the Stables Centre where
there are retail  therapy and refreshment opportunities.

The final part of the walk takes us through the village of Haigh,
passing a  rather splendid windmill en route, and then follows a
country path back  to civilisation and frequent buses  to Wigan. 8
    miles in total.

As always, please let the leader know the evening before if you
    are  joining the walk.
