Ah, the venerable Lister SR. First engine I ever rebuilt (and it is
still going strong before anyone starts making comments!).

Black smoke could be caused by two things:

1. Poor injector spray (caused by dirty or worn injectors). Take them to
any diesel injector specialist and they will clean/reset them for a
modest fee, or if worn replace the nozzle for a slightly less modest
fee. If they have been in use since the early 80's then this is probably
well worthwhile.

2. Poor combustion caused by lack of compression. Either poor valve
sealing or more likely worn bores/rings.

Blue smoke is down to burning oil (or very dodgy fuel)! Again, assuming
oil burning it could be two things:

1. Valve guide wear.

2. Bore/ring wear.

With the time since the last rebuild, I would whip the heads off, get
the injectors done and check the bores. If there is little sign of wear
on the bores, just "glaze bust" them and put in a new set of rings. If
there is a lot of wear (a step in the bore will show this) then get the
bore bored out and put in the relevant oversize pistons/rings. Decoke
everything and bung it back together. All of this can be done with the
engine in place as it is all done from the top (except for the slightly
fiddly undoing of the injector pipe from the top of the pump) and the
parts are relatively easy to obtain. Other than sending stuff off to be
rebuilt/bored out, you should be able to do this comfortably over a
weekend (or one day of you have done them before). If when you get the
tops off you find play in the big ends, then this would probably be
easier to sort with the engine out (unless you are some sort of
contortionist).

If you want a copy of the manual to see the job in more detail, I have a
load of photocopies of it and you are welcome to one.

Cheers

George "Bungle" Eycott
