Yes, it can happen. However you will normally hear the big ends knocking
long before it gets to that stage (diesel not really being a suitable
lubricant for big ends). There are two reasons that these engines are
slightly more prone to it than others:
1. The internal fuel pumps and pipes mean that any diesel leak ends up
in the sump
2. The engine breather feeds into the air intake, so the mist of diesel
in the sump if the above happens gets drawn into the air intake.
There are two options:
1. Remove the oxygen. DO NOT USE YOUR HAND TO BLOCK THE AIR INTAKE! An
SR2 running at above full tilt will happily suck your hand down the air
intake with unpleasant consequences. Safest way is to fire a CO2
extinguisher into it.
2. Use the decompressors. Note, this is an emergency measure only as it
will often cause the valves to bounce off the piston (especially if the
engine is running at speed). You should never use them to stop the
engine under normal circumstances.
As others have said, if it is not possible to do this safely, run away.
Also bear in mind that even with the Listers, this is still very
unusual. Check the oil daily (you do this anyway don't you?) and if it
starts to rise (or don't need to keep topping it up like you used to)
start looking for the leak.
Hope that helps
