As I understand it, abolishing the derogation would mean we were being
good Europeans, and moving towards a harmonized tax structure. When it
comes to the issue of the amount of fuel duty levied by the Exchequer,
the official line is that it should be up to each individual country to
set its own revenue raising policies (or something like that).
To paraphrase, anything European that pushes the tax take up is good,
anything European that would reduce the tax take is unwarranted
interference. Or maybe I'm just being cynical!
