I'm sorry, that should read "Mixed news from the cut".

Good news
==========
When Uncle Mort was new, in January 2003, I took the wise step of
stashing away some Fray Bentos tinned pies on special offer from
Morrison's in Bilston. A selection of creamy chicken and curried
chicken. There was one languishing in the galley, until tonight. Even
these heavy duty comestibles have a best before date, and this one was
expired by several months. No matter. Being of a tidy nature and cast
iron gut I have consumed it. It's a peculiar ritual to prepare and
serve these things. Remove the lid with a tin opener to reveal a yellow
glutinous layer which becomes "the pastry". Pop the tin on a tray in a
hot oven for half an hour and the thing errupts into an extravagant
browning mass. Now try to get it on a plate. It's very hot, very sticky
and reluctant to be parted from it's tin. Eventually it is juggled onto
the plate with the filling on top of the mound of pastry.

So now I have burned the roof of my mouth, as well as the tips of my
fingers but I am soothing the pain with some bottled Pedigree (which is
a year past it's sell by date).

The pie didn't taste at all bad.

Bad news
=========
I spoke to Dave Hearmon who is cruising with Janet on Raven on the
Shroppie and approaching his new mooring spot in Market Drayton. His
trip has been re-jigged several times and for various reasons he has
not made it to any of his original destinations - Stratford, Sharpness
and Stourport. He chose Llangollen instead but was thwarted by a breach
which he has described to me in full detail, while my pie has been
browning. The essential news is that there is a hole in the canal near
Br 12, curiously only a mile from a village named Ravensmoor. BW are
busy fixing it and hope all will be well for the weekend. This has
messed up quite a few hire boat outings.

Plans (you gotta have some)
=====
Tomorrow I'm off to Braunston by car to collect some paint, Friday UM
is bound for Sharpness en route Lydney (again). The weather forecast
looks promising. If we are spared, we should be spending some time on
PS Waverley next Tuesday on an excursion from Sharpness to Ilfracombe.
