1) There has never been a requirement for a BW assisted passage from
Ashton. The only restriction is the need for a booked passage up the
Diggle Locks, from Lock 24w upwards (I say booked rather than assisted,
as boaters are usually left to get on with it, with a BW chap keeping an
eye on things).

2) You are not allowed to go up to Diggle, wind and come back down
again. You may only go up the Diggle Locks if you are booked to go
through Standedge Tunnel. Lock 24w is padlocked and only opened to allow
booked boats to pass through.

The last winding point before the Diggle Locks is at Wool Road, Dobcross
- between Locks 23w and 24w, which is a pleasant enough spot to moor,
with water and other facilities at hand and The Navigation Inn a few
yards along the road.
