The levels were down about 12-15" so we ran aground several times (BT guys came out and sorted it) We picked up someone's lounge carpet round the prop and I spent over an hour down the weed hatch clearing it. Our starter battery went flat and we had to borrow some jump leads to start the engine from the domestic batteries. All this meant that we had taken 4 hours to do two locks. As advised, we intended to be in Castlefields by noon, but it was already that time when we got going again. So it was with some trepidation regarding problems from the locals that we carried on through the middle of the day. I'm pleased to report that all the Mancunians that we met were pleasant, friendly and helpful. Including the guy who went to his house to fetch his own jump leads for us when we asked directions to a car accessory shop, and the group of lads who watched us go through a lock and and were interested in how it worked and why it was there. (They live next to a canal and no-one had bothered to explain this to them before !) It was a long and tiring day, but none of the troubles (except maybe the carpet) were due to the locals.
