I got the distinct impression that he thinks using the river at all a crime. 
The river level was normal but he did suggest that we should leave Boston as 
soon as possible because if it rained overnight there might be too strong a 
current for us to be able to get back up-river against it.

The previous week there had been a tremendous argument that had nearly 
erupted into a fight  between him and a narrowboater. The boat had had to 
use one of the short finger pontoons so the owner had tied his bow rope back 
to the adjacent pontoon to stop it from swinging around; the sluice keeper 
reckoned this was a safety hazard (we spoke to both him and the boater on 
consecutive days, it was interesting hearing both sides of the story).

Several people told us that such arguments were not unusual, and that he had 
been thrown into the river by angry boaters at least twice last year (on one 
occasion his lawn-mower was thrown in after him).
