GC Newts may or may not be rare, but they can cause serious upheavals. While
I was at university we did a field trip to a certain well known atomic
weapons establishment, where we spent a very enjoyable couple of hours
listening to the (very Scottish, very dour) water treatment manager
bewailing the infestation of "nieuts" in the treatment tanks( they clearly
don't mind a little residual radiation in their environment). This wildlife
bonanza meant that the entire area was surrounded and criss-crossed by knee
high blue plastic fences which were something to do with the study of the
newts and their continuing safety, bl***y murder for the safety of anyone
working in the area of course. It also meant that the tanks could not be
cleaned or treated to repair damage, seriously compromising their ability to
deal with potentially hazardous run off in flood conditions. "Nieuts"
apparently trumped everything including potential damage to the wider
environment. If GCN are found in the area in question, then I doubt that
there is any chance of restoration unless this attitude has changed.
