Day 5 - Wednesday July 5th - Crick to Crane's Lock, GU Leicester Section 24 miles 2 furlongs, 14 locks, 12 hours 30 minutes
Bit of a lie in this morning, didn't set off until 8.00am. Chugged steadily around the summit, reaching the top of Foxton at 3.30pm. Major thunderstorm started at 9.20am, just after I passed Yelvertoft. Torrential downpour for about 30 minutes before easing back to heavy rain for a bit. At Foxton I was told I would be second boat down when the current batch of up boats had exited. Grabbed a bacon roll from the shop by the top lock - Excellent, really hit the spot! Started down the flight just after 4.00pm, middle pound at 4.40pm, out of the bottom lock at 5.10pm. Slight delay one lock from the end of the first staircase while waiting for the single upbound boat to reach the middle pound. This allowed the Canaltime boat following me to reach the lock behind me, whereupon they started raising the relevant paddles to bring their boat down to my lock. It might have been a bit more interesting if I'd already raised the paddles to fill the next lock and drain mine lock and not noticed what they were doing. A drained side pound, their boat sat on the bottom of the lock, and a lot of shouting by the lock keeper would have resulted. As it was a few quick words prevented any problem. Turned left at the junction, through Saddington tunnel and down the first four wide locks, to moor above Crane's Lock at 8.30pm. Time for a BBQ under fairly threatening skies.
