Day 7 - Friday July 7th - Leicester to Loughborough
15 miles 5 furlongs, 11 locks, 10 hours 20 minutes
Set off from the mooring at 8.00am, and was about to leave the first
lock (North Lock) when another boat arrived behind me. Shared the next
couple of locks with them, but then it was back to doing locks on my
own. Sometime around midday the rain started in earnest, it had been
occasional spits and spots before then. Cossington Sileby and
Mountsorrel Locks were worked in increasingly heavy rain. I tied up just
below Mountsorrel Lock, intending to walk into the village to buy some
stuff. Found that the shop I had used before close to the lock had
closed, and I had to walk half a mile through the village to where there
was a post office and newsagents. When I went to restart the engine, I
noticed a large puddle of oil over near the engine start batteries. I
started the engine so that I could see where it was coming from, and
found a steady dribble coming from a joint with the oil pressure sender.
With the aid of some spanners I managed to turn this steady dribble into
a fairly respectable stream, so off went the engine (quickly!). A quick
look at Nich's revealed that the boatyard I had passed late on in the
morning did emergency callout. A phone call had their engineer on his
way, and he cut the end off the pipe, fitted a new olive and hey presto,
no oil leak any more. All for the massive fee of fifteen pounds. I
didn't have the odd fiver, so gave him twenty instead (I had been
anticipating a 'standard' callout charge of fifty or so). All told, I
was tied up there for just two hours. As an added bonus, the rain had
now gone, and the sky was beginning to brighten. Chugged off to (and
through) Barrow Deep and Pilling's Flood Locks. The flood lock was in
use, although with a fall of only 3 inches. Tied up outside the pub by
Meadow Lane Bridge in Loughborough at 6.20pm. Wandered into town to find
a cashpoint, and then adjourned to the pub to eat, drink and chat with
the locals. Looking at the timings, I could well be in Alrewas on Sunday
evening. Are you around Will? Fancy a pint or two down the King William??
