I know it was a long time ago when I hired with friends etc, but one thing
we would avoid at all costs was paying for a mooring in them days (late
80's early 90's), the only one I can remember us paying was the deep water
harbour in Bristol because our hire boat was sinking! (another story)

All the hire boats we had, had good showers and loos etc if a pub wanted to
charge for mooring then we kept going, our rule was always hire a boat two
berths more than was needed for people and to help to fill the extra berths
was crates of beer (a lot of beer).

The rule then about running the engine was if you cruised through the day
you will not need to run the engines in the evening and you were not allowed
to run the engine after 20:00hrs and you were not insured to cruise during
the night.
