Day 24 - Monday 17th July 2006

Dad went back to Penkridge on his bike, and bought a nice little door
handle, and surface mounted striker plate. Then we got on our way at 12:00.
We kept catching up with the boat in front, but they weren't doing a bad
rate, and we reached Milford Wharf at 13:50, where we moored for lunch next
to the turn over bridge. Dad was a bit annoyed about the noise from the
passing trains, as he wanted to stop earlier - but I wanted the shade, and I'm
glad I did. We set off again at 14:30 after our friends from earlier had
gone past, after stopping for lunch earlier on the canal.

At Colwich Lock (second down from Great Haywood), we had to wait for a boat
to come up before our friends could drop. I was wondering why the lady didn't
go and help them - I was just thinking "typical", when they turned to us,
and explained why. Apparently the lady had gone down to close the gate for
them, when they shouted for her not to. We have had problems with others not
wanting our help before, so we sympathised with her. The boat coming up then
messed about, closing the gate paddle before it was ready, so it took even
longer to reach level.

There were some very harsh words said as they came out of the lock, and I
have it all on camera! I'm not really sure what happened, but I am guess the
other boat thought she was going to close the gate on them, and shouted, and
she took it the wrong way. However I don't think there was the need for the
comments from them as they left.

We continued down to Rugely for some shopping. While watching a TV program
later, the smell of pipe/cigar/cigarette smoke came drifting in. I didn't
really want that on a night we needed all the windows open, so I moved the
boat further down the canal. Dad wanted to stay, but said I could do what I
wanted to.

The problem with this stretch of canal is that there are very few quite
moorings for quite a distance. We tried several places, which for various
reasons were no good. We finally found a place near the aqueduct at
Tuppenhurst (just past Handsacre).
