I was lucky enough to inherit about 80ft of chain with the boat. Its got a nice
big 19kg anchor on the end. To make sure it stays attached its shackled to the
t-stud at the bitter end and attached further up to a welded strongpoint in the
front cockpit by a loop of rope intended to absorb the shock.

The theory is that any shock that breaks the rope should have used up a
significant amount of its energy in doing so and the t-stud should hold the
remainder plus the tiny amount built up due to the foot or so of play
remaining. The weight of the chain itself acts as additional shock absorber -
lifting it off the bottom takes energy.

In the future I plan to go for a loop of climbing rope - that's designed to
absorb shock. This is all to deal with the tidal Thames and the really deep bit
where Gravel Extraction has taken place near Windsor. Yes I am a wuss! :)

The chain is either laid out along the roof if running with the anchor within
the steerers reach for when it might be needed instantly or coiled down in a
bucket when merely 'ready'.

Its not the classical way to do it and its probably deeply wrong in some way
but it suits me :)

Yes - all that chain and stuff does affect the boats trim! (And its moot ATM as
I need to get the boat fixed)
