Day 22 - Saturday July 22nd - Brierley Hill to Netherton
3 miles 1 furlong, 1 lock, 1 hour 50 minutes
Only a short cruise today, as I had arranged a meeting with a chap who
moors at Withymoor Island moorings to have a look at a problem that has
been developing with the trusty FR3. It appears that not all cylinders
are firing properly, and a certain amount of unburnt diesel is coming
out of the exhaust. This could be down to dirt in the fuel and a
blocked injector, or possibly something has gone wrong with the
injection timing on one of the pumps. Anyway, this chap said he'd have
a look. Set off from outside the Merry Hill centre at 10.25, and after
battling heroically with yet more blanket weed, stopped to use the
facilities above Blowers Green lock. After filling with water and
getting rid of rubbish and Thetford contents, I carried on to Withymoor
Island, tying up on the service point at 1.05pm. The local resident
boaters said I would be fine there for the rest of the day and overnight
if I wished. The resident diesel expert was away playing a gig up at a
park in Netherton, but he reappeared at around 5pm. After listening to
my descriptions and explanations, we started the engine. He listened
for a bit, sniffed a bit, played around with the throttle for a bit and
finally agreed with me that I probably had a fuel injection problem.
After making a couple of calls, he suggested that my best bet would be
to go to the boatyard at the top of the Wolverhampton 21, where there
was someone described as the Midlands Mr Lister. So, the plan now is to
head there tomorrow and see the man on Monday morning. Decided to spend
the night moored where I was, and get a bus back to Brierley Hill to
check that the quality of the Batham's hadn't dropped overnight. :-)
Spent another enjoyable evening in the company of friends made the night
before.
