Nantwich have been fitted with the Fenner granny boxes, takes an age to
wind the damn things up. At least they mostly run smoothly enough that
you can drop the paddles controlling the speed with a hand on the shaft
rather than having to wind them down again.
I *always* lower paddles this way. Unless they're the dreaded hydraulic type
which thankfully are being phased out.
Many years ago, we had just started out on a holiday when an old boy [think
of lockkeeper dad in "The Bargee"] watching me at the lock paddle, threatened
to report me to BW for 'misuse of BW property!' Later in that same holiday we
were passing through the Watford staircase with BW men assisting us. They were
much in evidence owing to the fact that there was an award ceremony about to
take place [best sideponds or something similar] my mate Robin standing
opposite a BW man at the bottom gates of one of the locks barely seven feet
away, thought he'd better be entirely correct & wind the paddle down. I had to
laugh from my position @ the tiller when the BW bod used the hand-on-shaft
method, simultaneously talking to his colleague behind him!
