The Cap'n and others have asked me to dredge the recesses of my memory
regarding Tom o' the Wood at Rowington.
The mini-GiG in question was held at this site on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2002.
While I cannot be certain of all of the attendees--you will have to remember
that this was our first cruise, and we were still quite agog with all the
goings-on, and friendliness of the list members we met--I do remember the
good Captain, the not-yet-elected Andrew Dyke and Wendy, Roger & Margaret
Millin, to whom I was introduced, and who promptly sat at the other end of
the table [was it something I said?], Neil Arlidge, and Sean Neill. [Barry,
I apologise for the length of the preceeding sentence!] There may have been
others present besides Anne and my cousin John and his wife, Maggie, but I'm
afraid that time has expunged them from my memory. Worthy of mention,
however is Richard Sands of then nb Scimitar, who was very gracious in
coming out to assist us down Hatton the next day. He had been unable to
attend the gig, but found the time on his lunch hour to come and say hello.
T o t W, when entered, had the dining area off to the right, and the main
drinking area straight ahead and to the left. I remember a rather small
parking area, and that there were not a lot of locals in attendance. The
meal was quite good, iirc, and the conversation, although a bit
shop-talkish, was enjoyable.
The next Gig I was fortunate enough to attend was also arranged by the good
Cap'n, and I believe that he is correct in saying that it was at the Four
Halfpennies in Warwick. That was just before the beginning of our last
cruise, in which we combined the Avon and Stourport Rings, and cleverly
missed Tardebigge, substituting the Wolverhampton 21 instead. Besides
Beeky, I remember meeting the Keens family for the first time, as well as
renewing acquaintance with the Dykes, and is it possible that Richand Sands
was there, too? Certainly a good time was had by all, and Anne and I look
forward to meeting more of our friends during our next cruise on the Thames
Ring in September. We'd be particularly pleased to meet you better half,
Cap'n, and of course anyone else you can drag along!
I hope that the foregoing has jogged some memories, and look forward to
seeing you all again very soon.
Cheers,
Phil
