Day 34 - Thursday August 3rd - Fradley to Atherstone
21 miles 3 furlongs, 13 locks, 9 hours 50 minutes
Set off at 7.00am, at exactly the same time as a Challenger boat moored
four boats ahead of me. This was the same boat who had winded in front
of me the day before and that I'd followed all the way through Rugeley.
I wasn't too worried though, as there were 11 miles to do to get to
Fazeley Junction and I wanted to stop there to fill up with water and do
a bit of Thetfordry. He soon left me behind, as I tend to drop right
down to tickover when passing moored boats, and I don't think he was
slowing up nearly as much. Got to Peels Wharf as 10.35am, and spent
half an hour attending to the necessary tasks. Passed the Junction at
11.10am, and joined the queue for Glascote locks. A fair amount of
traffic in both directions meant that there was no stopping to open or
close gates, so I wasn't seriously delayed. Out of the top of the pair
at 12.05pm. Stopped for about 20 minutes to nip into Polesworth to buy
some milk, as what was left in the container had a rather peculiar smell
to it. Got to the bottom of the Atherstone flight at 2.55pm and out of
the top at 5.35pm. Plenty of boats going down and at least one behind
me going up. Generally speaking it went quite well, although I did have
one lock turned in my face while I was waiting for a boat to get out of
the tail of the lock. In their defence, they didn't see me as there was
a road bridge in the way, although I felt they might have made some sort
of effort to check! Planning to wander into Atherstone later this
evening to sample the delights that the town has to offer. :-)
