On our last boat we had a Mansfield and holding tank and during summer
months we regularly used to experience unpleasant smells, but these were not
evident in winter months.

We are currently cruising with a couple who have Mansfield dump through loo
and holding tank and their frequency of emptying is c28 days. They have been
liveaboard for 10 years and are experiencing similar unpleasant smells
during summer but none in winter. They have used the same very highly
concentrated formalhyde free chemical (in fact he is the supplier to RBOA
members, and anyone else who wants to buy it).

During this summer they have discovered that the amount of chemical used can
eradicate this unpleasant smell syndrome in particular when the tank is more
than 1/2 full. Their remedy has been to reduce the amount of chemical used
by approx 50% to a mere 5ml per person per week. (A 1L bottle will then last
18 months).

Has anyone else had similar experiences/results. Also if anyone wants more
detail of the chemical please contact me.

Incidentally we have just started using the same chemical in our porta potti
and due to the small amount used we shall make a monetary saving.
