I wrote about this problem of lift bridges in Canal and Riverboat a year or
two back. On the K&A there ARE landing stages on both side of the lock which
makes life easier, though as on the Leeds and Liverpool you can get some
impatient drivers on busy roads who will make your life a misery. You're
still left with the problem of what to do then. I strongly disapprove of the
'Banbury pole' method. Instead I have a short length of rope threaded
through the cleat of a mooring pin and tie the bridge down, ensuring the pin
is well hammered in. Tedious, yes. But safe.

I don't know exactly what BW's policy is towards single handers, but I guess
it wouldn't be positive if it ever got head to head. A while back on this
list I suggested the idea of a single handed club with a view to defending
what we do if ever there was talk of prohibiting it. I had some idea of
formulating and codifying techniques of best practice so as to minimise
damage to boat and canal infrastructure. I had some idea that we could even
have competiotiions at rallys over a set course with judges at every lock
... etc etc

But I only got one positive response - from the captain of Quiddich, I seem
to recall. Perhaps now's the time to raise the idea again?
