: Since the announcement that most boats going through central London have
: to have VHF radio I have been trying to get to the bottom of the
: situation. As far as I can make out if you only have a portable radio
: the boat doesn't need a licence. There must however be a licensed
: operator on board who is allocated a call sign.
I hold a licence but I don't have a call sign, the radio station has the
call sign. The operators licence as far as I'm aware lasts for ever. I
have not used a radio for over 6 years now. I did have to sign a secrecy
agreement that I would not repeat anything I heard on the radio that got
me into a conflict at work once. I refused to repeat to management what I
heard.
