Not only "condoned" by the teacher - but encouraged!
Knowing what kids do - I expected there to be a handy hole somewhere along
the fence line where the people who use the inside of the enclosed football
area, pop out to retrieve their footballs, rather than use the gate. This was
so at the Eldonian Sports Centre, and we knew that we would be gone by the time
the Centre opened in the morning - so the only answer was to use the hole to
retrieve our trapped footballs.
Thanks anyway, Niall, for reading my account - probably the only person who
did!
Meanwhile in response to the thread about young children working boats and
locks - that has always underlined my trip philosophy - to encourage youngsters
to go canalling themselves later in life - or to encourage them to take their
families - and to be able to teach their families how to cruise safely and
"properly". My ex-canallers have ended up hiring boats, going on work parties
and encouraging other younger people to join in as well. The only sad thing is
that 14 year olds can no longer go on work parties - but have to play at it at
WOW. I am sure that the 14 year olds who I took digging on the Stourbridge 16
were the winners!
