I expect a lot of people know this, but I didn't !

Last year UM's original stem button was on it's 3rd summer and looking
tatty so I purchased a replacement from a certain multi branch
Chandlery in the Midlands for about £70. I fitted it in the spring and
down there on the G&S there is no use for such things as buttons except
they do make your boat "look the part".

As soon as we started locking on this summer's excursion the darned
thing started falling off. All the blooming time. It pisses me off.
Going up - usually off. Going down - always off.

Today I visited the Tradline Fendery at Braunston and spoke to one of
the chaps that does things with rope. I explained my problem and asked
him what lies within their £72 button. The answer is "rope" not a bald
chinese go kart tyre that's completed 10,000 laps of the Ying Tong
Tiddly Poh Raceway but "rope". This means that the button yields to the
repeated pressure of a boat up it's jacksy and modifies it's shape to
something compatible with a steel nb stem. This makes it work better,
after a few weeks persuasion.

Although I am still fiddling with the naff button from the Chandlery in
the Midlands, and trying to make it work, I suspect the only
satisfactory outcome will be the purchase of a new one, from someone
that knows how they work. Messrs Flockhart & Co cannot be the only folk
that know the secret but do make sure you don't buy a dodgy one with a
rubber core unless you've got multiple attachment points and are
convinced the little chap will stay put.
