On Tuesday 5th we reached Newbold near 7pm and for the first time, in
our experience, there was nowhere to moor. Perhaps we have finally
caught up with the Beale Park leavers. There was a bankside space
immediately before the tunnel which I had a good look at, but the lady
from the next boat warned that there had been a serious case of
grounding earlier in the day. I gingerly tried to get alongside (the
bank, not the woman) but hit something underwater and decided to abort.
In the gathering gloom we continued through the tunnel, which was not
illuminated, and found a suitable place to stop on what must be fairly
new piling, with good depth, at Falls Bridge.
This morning at 8am I set off back to Newbold on foot to buy a
newspaper. The tunnel was now illuminated by 10 groups of 3
floodlights, each group comprising, I think, a blue, a purple and a
white beam. Very nice but why, and at what cost to install and operate.
I don't want to pay for that.
I decided to walk back over the tunnel but failed to find the
appropriate path so had to make do with a trek along the verge of the
busy road.
