The C&O canal at Cumberland Maryland USA had shuttle mine cars that
ran from the mines to the canal head. Here in the USA the railroad
network likes to haul long distance freight and we have lost half of 
our system
 in the past 30 years. There are points were bulk transport in needed
but is only served by water. To get a switch installed requires a 4
year contract. There was one railroad barge that ran to Puetro Rico to
deliver chemicals. What I am proposing is that barges cary railroad
cars on our river and canal system in the USA as alternitve to
building expensive new track. Industrys that are seasonal or use rail
spartenly can get railroad freight rates and have the avatage of
Intermodal
