Perhaps the shallowest point over something solid is the bottom of the
tunnel? If so, what about the possibility of blasting out some of the
rock involved (I *think* the bottom is rock, not a brick invert),
either to allow for a lower water level or to create enough depth
(just in the tunnel) for the caisson solution? Possibly easier and
less risky than blasting rock of the tunnel roof?
IIRC, the level of this pound was raised a decade or two ago as part
of a scheme to increase the flow along it and thus to discourage reed
growth. Was that ever reversed?
Is it possible to determine what the original level was, and how much
(if at all) the current level departs from it?
An interesting question which becomes more relevant with each further
lock the Uttoxeter lot reopens.
